• Get Our Get Active 2015 Challenge comes to an end

    Colleen Lindholm | June 17, 2015

Congratulations participants of the 2015 Get Out Get Active Challenge! You walked, ran, swam, biked, danced and MOVED!! The challenge is in place to provide a fun way for you to works towards a healthier you and you are well on your way!!

This was the first year the Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) joined the Edmonton area initiative, replacing the Virtual Trek. In total there were 10 PCNs as a part of the challenge, with close to 1,000 people participating logging over 209 million steps. Virtually travelling an African Safari, participants increased their physical and mental well-being while receiving valuable health and fitness tips along the way, as well as information on the participating PCNs.

A key partner in the success of this year’s challenge was the Augustana Fitness Center. They played a substantial role to the success of the challenge, keeping track of PCN Groups and individual progress on their bulletin board, organizing the local kick-off with a free Outdoor Zumba class, plus having fun with the Safari Selfie contest where participants of the Camrose PCN Group sent in pictures of themselves being active, which entered them into the grand prize draw a One Year Augustana Fitness Membership.  The winner of the draw was Melody Brager, who sent in some great photos of her being active biking, walking and even skipping!

The Camrose PCN would also like to thank the Camrose Public Library for offering a weekly walk every Tuesday as part of the Get Out Get Active Challenge.  They enjoyed finding new routes to walk each week, having a lot of fun along the way.

The overall Get Out Get Active Challenge grand prize winner was Bill Adair from the Leduc/Beaumont/Devon PCN group. Bill placed 314 overall with a total of 318,155 (241km) and consistently entered his steps from April 27-June 7th. Bill won four tickets to: Disney Presents The Lion King at Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, one African Themed night at the Fantasyland Hotel, Edmonton Queen Riverboat – Gift Card and four passes to Edmonton Valley Zoo. Huge congratulations goes out to Bill from all of the PCNs! Great job & keep on trekking!

“We were so pleased to be a part of the Get Out Get Active Challenge this year where we as PCN's can “model the way” for active lifestyles and provide people in our community with opportunities for increased physical activity,” states Stacey Strilchuk, Executive Director of the Camrose PCN. “We know physical activity produces overall physical, psychological and social benefits but it’s important to remember physical activity should be fun too!”

Great job everyone in the Camrose PCN group for being such active participants in the challenge and ranking us as the team who trekked the farthest! More information will be sent out for next year's challenge early 2016. Watch for the challenge to get even bigger and better at www.camrosepcn.com.
