Recognizing and Managing a Sports Concussion: what you need to know

In partnership with Dr. Timothy Weighman, a Family Physician with a special interest in sports medicine, the Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) is pleased to offer a presentation to parents, athletes, educators, coaches, officials and interested community members about how to prevent, recognize and manage a sports concussion.

Being involved in sports are a great way for children and youth to have a healthy and active lifestyle, make friends, and build character.  According to Parachute Canada, a leading Canadian organization in injury prevention, 40% of head injuries in children aged 10 to 14 occur during sport.

A concussion is a common form of head and brain injury, and can be caused by a direct or indirect hit to the head or body (for example, a car crash, fall or sport injury). Often, concussions can go untreated (and even unnoticed by others) because symptoms are often invisible to casual observers. Without proper management, a concussion can result in permanent problems and seriously affect one's quality of life.

The Camrose PCN recognizes it is important to take a preventive approach when dealing with concussions. Prevention and management of sports concussions is most successful when parents, athletes, educators, coaches and officials are properly educated and informed.

Please join us for SPORTS CONCUSSIONS: what you need to know - a free presentation from Dr. Timothy Weighman on Thursday, October 24th at 6:30pm in the community rooms upstairs at the Camrose Recreation Centre (Edgeworth Centre).

“I intend to use the presentation to give practical advice about recognition and good management of concussion in sport for parents/athletes, educators and coaches/officials,” says Dr. Weighman.

Dr. Weighman brings his experience and expertise to this presentation from working with concussed Rugby and recreational athletes in England and more recently in his current role as Sports physician at Glen Sather Clinic in Edmonton.  He has coached junior and senior rugby in the past as well as being a rugby player for 30 years, so has experienced management of concussion from all perspectives.  Currently Dr. Weighman practices at The Gemini Medical Clinic as a primary care sports and musculoskeletal physician.
“Camrose is an active community with individuals of all ages enjoying sports and recreation opportunities.  Education about concussion is one of the most important aspects of concussion prevention,” says Stacey Strilchuk, PCN Executive Director.
“The Camrose PCN and its entire physician membership are very pleased to offer this public education event – knowing we all have a role to play in the recognition, management and prevention of sports concussion.”
